Stourhead

Although part of the National Trust, we have included Stourhead as a separate attraction as it is very close to us and so beautiful.  It is a must for the House, just a walk around the lake or even through the woods.

Please ask us for details as we go there frequently and there are many different walks (both long and short) and sceneries to enjoy.

Please note dogs are not always admitted to the lakeside walks so its best to check, but they are welcome on most of the other routes.

Please our other NT page.  This is the link to the National Trust Stourhead site

As part of the broader estate there is also Alfred’s Tower.

There is a car park from which you can both visit the tower but also walk down to the Stourhead estate and the ‘Spread Eagle’ pub at the bottom of the hill. Note that the pub allows dogs in the bar but not is the restaurant.

Henry HoareII planned the tower in the 1760s to commemorate the end of theSeven Years' War against France and the accession ofKing George III, and it was erected near the site of Egbert's Stone, where it is believed thatAlfred the Great,King of Wessex, rallied the Anglo-Saxons in 878 before theBattle of Edington. The tower was damaged by an aeroplane in 1944 and restored in the 1980s.
